It’s always wise to map out a foreign country before you start traveling. The world is a big place, despite how much we’ve managed to compress things with rapid transit, and it’s very easy to get lost with just one wrong turn.

Rocamadour on its own isn’t terribly complex. It can, however, be a bit tricky getting there if you don’t know the area. Luckily, the internet has come to the rescue once again, and in this case has a high-flying satellite image of the area that you can have a look at to help plot your course.

And fancy that: it’s right here. Click on the link and you’ll find a nice, high shot above Rocamadour that you can zoom in to check details or zoom out and check the routes to the town. Now you have no excuse to get lost - so long as you always have internet access, anyway.

Looking to travel to France for some sightseeing? Have you had your eye on Rocamadour? You’ve chosen wisely. The area’s a nice little hub of historical elegance combined with good dining and accommodations.

As it was a dependency of a nearby abbey, Rocamadour is within easy traveling distance to said abbey. The church of Notre Dame in particular is a good place for visitors to check out. Besides the abbey there are also several cultural destinations, such as the Musee d’Art Sacre with its extensive collections of art and the Basilique St-Sauveur.

Hotels are easily found in the area, ranging between larger affairs and relatively small beds and breakfasts. Click on our Hotels link for more information on some of the best in the area.

Rocamadour cheese, made from the milk of goats, originated from the French regions of Perigord and Quercy (Where Rocamadour the commune may be found). It was originally named ‘Cabecou de Rocamadour’, though the cabecou label has since been discarded.

It takes approximately 12 to 15 days to properly age, though depending on yyour palate you may prefer cheese that has been allowed to age for longer than that range. As it matures the cheese acquires rind that changes from white to a browny yellow.

Rocamadour cheese is usually eaten on toast or in salads, and can often be found on its own along with a bottle of wine (lirac for white, beaujolais for red).

Brive-la-Galliarde, France, is known as the “bold”, or “courageous” city. During the second World War, Brive was a headquarters for the French Resistance.

It was also the first occupied French city that liberated itself in the spring of 1944. Brive is currently one of the few ways to get to the french city of Rocamadour. Rocamadour is a remote city with a deep religious heritage. Legend has it that St. Arnadour settled in the city after witnessing the martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul, which makes Rocamadour a popular site for religious pilgrimages.

However, in order to access Rocamadour, one generally has to stop a Brive as it is the nearest city with a train station. Rocamadour via Brive La Galliarde makes a perfect vacation itinerary for anyone wanting to view some of Frances most historic sites. From the Shrine of Our Lady of Rocamadour, to the Labenche museum, anyone with an interest in Frech history would be remiss to pass up such sites.
